Minow (dean, Harvard Law Sch.) examines what has been accomplished since the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision—not only as far as racial desegregation but in how the idea of Brown has impacted English-as-a-second-language and single-sex education and the education of students with disabilities, the economically disadvantaged, Native Americans, and LGBT students. She also looks at Brown as an international influence and an impetus for the school-choice movement. Interestingly, she notes that "Brown may turn out to have more influence on racial justice outside the context of schooling, more influence on schooling outside the context of racial integration, and more significance to law outside of both race and schooling." Minow has authored several books on discrimination and equalization in education and on many other legal topics as well (e.g., Breaking the Cycles of Hatred: Memory, Law, and Repair).
VERDICT Comparable to The Unfinished Agenda of Brown v. Board of Education, Minow's book presents enlightening discussions for educators, policy makers, and informed citizens. Essential for academic and public libraries.
