Tatkin, therapist and author of both
Wired for Love and
We Do among many other relationship books, presents a manual for couples to tackle relationship challenges. Each chapter breaks down “common complaints” that Tatkin hears in his practice as well as the “corrections” he provides to help couples move forward in a healthier way. Special attention is paid to what the author calls the “big five” issues in relationships: money, time, sex, mess, and kids. Much of the content may prove too cerebral for those without psychology backgrounds (Tatkin uses his psychobiological approach to couples therapy), but it will surely find an audience with couples therapists. Backmatter includes references and an index.
VERDICT This is a well-organized and comprehensive guide for improving relationships that leans heavily on science and is best suited for practitioners. Recommended for academic libraries with family counseling programs and for large public libraries where self-help relationship books are popular.
