Eminent psychologist Koutstaal (psychology, Univ. of Minnesota;
The Agile Mind) and organization consultant Binks (InnovatingMinds4Change) team up to present a program to enhance creativity based on neurobiology and psychological experimentation. The result is a five-part "thinking framework": change the level of detail; attend to competing thoughts; allow room for both spontaneity and deliberateness in thinking; use sensing and feeling as well as cognition; and capture thoughts in some physical form. While their review of the literature is extensive, the resulting suggestions and activities are similar to those typically found in creativity literature.
VERDICT For academics and students who need a refresher on the experimental work on creativity, this title contains an excellent glossary and bibliography. It is also useful for engineers and product designers (and their managers), since most of the activities take into account their concerns. However, those seeking a less academic text should look elsewhere.
