Writer Bunn (The Sixth Gun) and artists Hervás (The Empty Man) and Sabbatini (Moon Knight) craft a nightmare scenario for readers in this compendium collecting volumes one through four of their 2023 National Cartoonists Society Reuben Awards Comics finalist series. Former detective Vic Hudgens has become obsessed with finding a serial mutilator who kidnaps victims and performs horrific surgeries without their consent. The survivors, including Heather, the daughter of trauma surgeon Carrie Reynolds, are left with destroyed and altered lives. Heather has had her vocal cords removed by the mutilator and is still in a coma at a local hospital. Hudgens has grown close to another victim who had his lower jaw taken. Hudgens and Carrie Reynolds decide to work together to find the culprit. While visiting Heather, Hudgens is injured in a battle against several people wearing gas masks and holding tools as weapons. Later, while visiting support groups of people who have had volunteer surgery, Hudgens and Reynolds come upon a lead. Using this information, they move towards the end game against a vicious psychopath ready to cut open anyone who gets in their way.
VERDICT Highly recommended for any fans of Bunn’s previous works. Fans of violent storylines, including Killadelphia by Rodney Barnes and The Boys by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, will find the artwork enthralling.
