Riverdale’s small-town status quo holds sway after vain Veronica became the undead hero Vampironica while defeating a full-fanged vampire assault on the community. The calm is broken, however, when punk bloodsuckers unexpectedly appear at Pop Tate’s Chok’lit Shoppe only to disappear after ambushing the chubby proprietor. Saving her friends, Veronica shockingly discovers her vampirism is still intact. Meanwhile, Betty and Archie watch over their friend Jughead’s lycanthropic condition in an alternative universe with no vampires at all. That gang shockingly discovers vampires are back when the fatally bitten Pop Tate appears in their chocolate shop, a surprise considering Jughead’s werewolf alter ego had previously ingested him. These events were put in motion when barriers between worlds were breached accidentally by a teen reading from an old book, which causes Vampironica and numerous villainous nosferatu to appear on the same world at werewolf Jughead.
VERDICT Unexpected humor complements this cracking good horror adventure yarn from Tieri (Absolute Carnage) and Eisma (Riverdale. Vol. 1), which unites multiple strands of the Archie multiverse of characters with subtle nods to the long-developed continuity of the Archie books.
