Intrigued by the flash-fiction phenomenon usually seen online, well-known mystery maven Penzler decided to compile an anthology dedicated to the under-1,000 words format. The result is a mammoth collection of 81 short-short stories varying in tone from gritty to teasing. While there is no overarching theme, readers will find that the selections come more from a criminal's point of view than a detective's. What is especially democratic is the egalitarian arrangement: strictly alphabetical by author name. Approximately one-fourth of the stories have previously been published in e-zines such as Shotgun Honey, Every Day Fiction, ThrillsKillsnChills, Spinetingler, and Out of the Gutter. These stories typically represent newer voices in the genre.
VERDICT This feels perfect for an ebook purchase: short, snappy, and hip stories. Buy for the busy reader or for anyone who wants to sample different authors. It's also an ideal readers' advisory tool for librarians getting up to speed on popular authors.
