LGBTQ Health Research: Theory, Methods, Practice

Rather than focusing on existing LGBTQ research, Stall (Grad Sch. of Public Health, Univ. of Pittsburgh), Brian Dodge (health science, Indiana Univ.-Bloomington), José Arturo Bauermeister (nursing, Sch. of Nursing, Univ. of Penn), Tonia Poteat (social medicine, Univ. of North Carolina–Chapel Hill), and Chris Beyrer (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Sch. of Public Health) focus on research methodologies involving LGBTQ communities. Building on The GLMA Handbook on LGBT Health and The SAGE Encyclopedia of LGBTQ Studies, the editors and contributors (mostly academics, though some are independent consultants) offer guidance in LGBTQ health research methodology while emphasizing respect, ethical behavior, and sensitive approaches to research subjects. Fourteen chapters examine the ambiguity of language, the need to set firm definitions and parameters when designing and implementing research projects, issues to consider during project design, selection of participants, best practices, and intervention development. Endnotes do double duty as chapter bibliographies and the signed, well-written, eminently readable chapters include case studies, charts, and diagrams clarifying a specific segment of the discussion.
