Holocaust memoirs are a testimony to human resiliency; this book is a remarkable example of this spirit. Written in collaboration with her great-grandson, Ebert’s memoir relates her upbringing as a little girl in Hungary and the loss of her mother and two of her four siblings in Auschwitz. Soon after her liberation, she has a heartfelt experience with an assistant chaplain and begins her life by settling in Israel and later London. Despite experiencing the horrors of the camp and huge personal loss, Lily made a promise to herself that she would survive and tell her story. The 98-year-old Ebert continues to tell her story in schools; in 1990 she established the Holocaust Survivors Centre in London. Prince Charles provides an introduction to the book. Heartbreaking, inspirational, and uplifting, this is an engaging story of one remarkable woman’s will to survive.
VERDICT The author’s attention to detail makes for an intimate and memorable read. Best suited for those interested in Judaica, European studies, and memoirs.
