Urban (Clam Shacks) has compiled a travel guide/cookbook of roughly 75 of his favorite lobster shacks on the New England coast. Almost all of the restaurants featured are small, family-run ventures. Urban provides detailed descriptions of the menus at each joint, along with a short history and often a recipe or other interesting callout, like his ten-point list on how to eat a lobster. The recipes are easy to prepare, and not all feature lobster. There's an award-winning clam chowder recipe from the Lobster Pot in Provincetown, MA; Bacon Bourbon Scallops from Portland Lobster Company; and coleslaw from Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale in Madison, CT. While nearly every restaurant offers its own take on the lobster roll, Urban informs readers of other specialties and points of interest, such as wait times, type of seating, and family-friendliness.
VERDICT Urban's book reads like an ultimate seafood lover's bucket list. It will be popular with readers familiar with the summer tradition of motoring up the coast in search of the freshest lobster roll. Display it with seasonal travel books or great beach reads. [For more lobster recipes, see Brooke Dojny's Lobster!, reviewed on p. 96.—Ed.]
