The first in Scott’s (
A Wager To Tempt the Runaway) planned “Peveretts of Haberstock Hall” series. Lord Tresham is a doctor, a second son of a wealthy family, and his sole passion in life is for treating the poor in London. He hasn’t considered romance, that is, until he meets Anne Peverett at his family’s annual charity ball. They are of like minds, kindred spirits. Both revel in the joy of potentially finding a partner until Lord Tresham discovers that Anne is an herbalist who has been treating people in his community. Lord Tresham is threatened by losing his patients and intimidated by a woman possessing medical knowledge without a degree; they soon become fast enemies. Scott manages to address complicated topics, including sexism and classism, while keeping readers immersed in the story.
VERDICT An enemies-to-lovers plot that ticks all the boxes.
