Geary is well known for his "Treasury of Murder" true crime stories.
Louise Brooks is a murder mystery starring the real silent-screen star (1906-85) as an amateur sleuth. It sounds like it would be difficult to pull off such a tale, but in Geary's capable hands, the book is quite enjoyable and believable. Beginning with Louise's reason for moving back to her hometown after her rise and eventual demise as a Hollywood starlet, the story then moves to her birthplace of Wichita, KS, where her parents live. The mystery is afoot when a friend's boyfriend has his car stolen and is later found brutally murdered. With her friend beside herself, Louise is suspicious and starts her own investigation, which leads to a surprising conclusion.
VERDICT Teens and adults who like a simple murder plot will find this fast-paced whodunit a fun read. Fans of Brooks who would be interested in seeing her in a fictional setting may relish her in the "role" of detective.
