In 1860 London, Countess Amelia Amesbury, the heroine of Winters’s debut historical cozy, is bored. Her husband of two years has died of a debilitating disease, and his young niece is now her ward. To ease her ennui, she secretly writes an advice column for a popular penny newspaper under the pen name Lady Agony. When a lady’s maid who believes that her mistress has been murdered asks Lady Agony for advice, Amelia arranges to meet her that night in the park. When Amelia arrives at the appointed spot, however, she finds that the woman has been murdered. Extraordinarily handsome Marquis Simon Bainbridge, the best friend of Amelia’s late husband, has followed her to the park, and together they search for the woman’s murderer. Narrator Ella Lynch adorns the story with a light English accent. Lynch provides superb characterizations, especially of characters of varying ages, and she ably brings out Amelia’s naivete.
VERDICT Fans of Bridgerton, fiction set in Victorian England, and the foibles of the English gentry will enjoy. Listeners will eagerly await more mysteries featuring Countess Amelia Amesbury and her handsome co-detective, Simon Bainbridge.
