Garden designer van der Kloet (Growing Bulbs in the Natural Garden) has consulted for the Netherlands’ Keukenhof, Chicago’s Lurie Garden, and New York’s Battery Park. Here, she shares her garden in Weesp, near Amsterdam, with the chapters organized by month. The author provides easy-to-follow gardening advice, details about her garden and its care, and her favorite plants by type, such as flower/plant color, ornamental grasses, and summer-flowering annuals. She also discusses projects she has worked on in Europe, Japan, and the United States. The entire book is illustrated with beautiful color photographs. Van der Kloet concludes with photographs of her favorite bulb combinations, listing the varieties and the percentages she uses for each design. U.S. gardeners will need to research her plant suggestions as USDA hardiness zones are not included, and not all metric measurements are translated.
VERDICT A beautiful book by a talented bulb specialist for gardeners who would like to accompany an expert in her garden or incorporate spring and summer-flowering bulbs in their gardens. Best purchased by those who don’t already have her book A Year in My Garden, since the content is similar, with the favorite bulb combinations being the principal addition.
