Eco-spirituality advocate and illustrator Reitz (
Touched in the Head) delivers a short collection born out of her childhood memories of experiencing seasons with a full range of sensations: sounds, smells, tastes, and more. Thus, this book is inspired by seasons: “Early Spring: Quiet Growth,” “Late Spring: Blossoming,” “Summer: Emergence,” “Early Fall: Reconnection,” “Late Fall: Preparation,” and “Winter: Stillness.” Each section opens with what that time of year tastes like (bitter greens in early spring), smells like (saltwater in summer), sounds like (the silence of the air outside in winter), and feels like (covering up with blankets in late fall). Each part also includes a reflection, affirmation, and guided (written) meditation, which is easy enough for a beginner. Reading them, however, doesn’t quite garner the same feeling as being guided through them. Readers may agree the premise of the book is good, and the approach to the seasons is creative, but overall, the text reads more like an enhanced journal.
VERDICT The thoughtful reflections, lovely drawings, and seasonally inspired affirmations may work for some readers in this written format, but this short guide might be better as an audiobook.
