Gideon Sable and his crew are like a supernatural version of the TV series Leverage, where the heroes are no better than the villains but they mostly operate on the side of the angels—even if one of them is “The Damned.” This outing’s over-the-top heist is to steal a ghost from Britain’s super-secret underground version of Area 51, while dodging one of Gideon’s old enemies and worrying over which one of his old friends isn’t exactly friendly anymore. It’s all in a day’s work for this madcap crew of con artists and tricksters who always save themselves in the nick of time, with the most panache and bloodshed possible. For series readers and fans of the author’s trademark snark, this latest entry in the “Gideon Sable” series (after What Song the Sirens Sang) is a real treat, even more so because it confirms a link between Gideon’s world and that of Green’s other supernatural hero, Ishmael Jones.
VERDICT A blast for urban-fantasy readers looking for a broken fourth wall riddled with dry-witted commentary, evil getting its just deserts, and the good walking away to fight the good fight.
