Hollywood publicist Lucy Green’s stock-in-trade is spin—a pretty word for lies. She’s so good at her job that she has even convinced herself that she enjoys eating yogurt for breakfast and dressing in stiletto heels and push-up bras at the office. On the eve of her 30th birthday, a day she’s expecting both a promotion and a marriage proposal, she wishes for the perfect day. When she wakes, however, she is horrified to discover she cannot tell even the whitest of lies. Then her boss makes inappropriate sexual advances—again. Only this time, Lucy tells him what she really thinks and sets off a company revolution. Maybe this could be her perfect day after all? Narrator Brittany Pressley provides a balanced reading of this humorous but thought-provoking book that tackles tough topics, even if it wraps them up a little too neatly. When the scene is funny, Pressley provides the amusement; when the tone shifts, she shifts with it. Her vocal range is wide enough to provide the characters their own identities.
VERDICT James’s debut makes for a highly entertaining audio, perfect for fans of Shauna Robinson or Leigh Stein. Libraries won’t be disappointed.
