It is inevitable that anyone who intentionally practices sustainability in their lives will become burned out or overwhelmed. It can happen at the start of learning sustainable practices or even after they have become everyday habits. This is the book to read when that happens. It contains numerous stories of small to big practices that will make a difference in this world’s fight against climate change. Each tale is small (a couple of paragraphs each) and when put together, they fill over 200 pages. As sustainability expert Biemer (
Our Environmental Handprints: Recover the Land, Reverse Global Warming, Reclaim the Future) points out, there are several stories where the business or person is not doing everything they possibly could, but that makes it relatable to everyone starting their journey. The stories are all arranged into chapters by a central theme, such as faith, or around a location such as Pittsburgh. Sprinkled about are sections called “Sustainable Wisdom” that offer encouraging ways to improve oneself.
VERDICT Easy to read a little bit at a time when inspiration is needed to continue (or to start) living sustainably. A helpful addition to a sustainable collection that already contains how-to guides.
