The latest work by Bunn (Harrow County) and Mutti (Prometheus) tells the tale of the search for a missing boy that spans two parallel realities. When the missing boy dreams, it causes the people around him to experience the same dream. His parents, Grover and Anette Greer, have split as a couple but continue to look for their son together, with his dreams as clues. Grover soon travels into a parallel dream world, full of monsters and golems, to search for his son’s captor, the Faceless Queen. There Grover befriends a warrior named Kahnawake, who is indigenous to the dream world (in Mutti’s sketchbook at the end of this volume, she describes the character as a fusion of Mohawk and Shawnee), and learns that his life in the dreamscape universe becomes more real every time he uses his incredible power. Meanwhile, the Faceless Queen has moved into the waking world and is building a cult of her own. The story is well-designed and will keep readers engaged, with flawless artwork of haunting environments.
VERDICT This volume, which collects issues 1 through 4 of the “Parasomnia” series, is highly recommended for fans of Bunn, Mutti, stories of parents seeking their missing children, or parallel worlds.
