Unusual events have occurred in Taylorsford, VA. A hit-and-run accident kills the girlfriend of library director Amy Webber's ex. A college student disappears for nearly a week, only to be found alive near the body of one of her professors, unable to recall how she got there. Both had been working in the library's archives on a project related to local folklore. As Amy and the police attempt to sort fact from mountain legend (involving fairies, hidden treasure, and a similar disappearance in the area's history), Amy must also deal with her current boyfriend's lack of candor and a stressful visit from both his and her parents. His attempt to keep a secret also leads to his being a suspect in the student's disappearance. Can she trust him when parts of his story seem to point to his involvement with another woman?
VERDICT Plenty of red herrings and the tension between Amy's former and current men will keep readers turning the pages. Gilbert's third "Blue Ridge Library" mystery can easily be read as a stand-alone. Recommend to fans of Laurie Cass, Eva Gates, or Jenn McKinlay.
