The second entry in the Gibson Vaughn series (after Short Drop) is a nonstop action thriller that leaves readers wanting to know what comes next. Vaughn is attempting to recover money swindled from the judge who saved his life, but he's not the only one with that idea. Jailed billionaire Charles Merrick is about to be released and there's a whole lot of people who want to talk to him. Vaughn reluctantly teams up with an ex-con and a mysterious female bartender, all of them hoping to be the ones who come out on top. The only complaint: a cliffhanger ending. Narrator James Patrick Cronin flawlessly performs every voice, from Vaughn and an odd Chinese fisherman to heavy hitters from the Mexican Cartel and bar owner/women's arm wrestling champion Margo.
VERDICT FitzSimmons enlivens what could be just another run-of-the-mill thriller with enough unique characters and innovative plot points to make this a must-read for thriller fans. Sure to be popular with readers of Brett Battles, Vince Flynn, and James Grippando.
