Presidential racial attitudes have often been mixed, reflecting the complex history of attitudes of the nation at large toward African Americans. Jones (history, Central Michigan Univ.) and Pulitzer Prize winner Freedman (journalism & international studies, Michigan State Univ.) compile selected presidential documents (letters, speeches, newspaper articles, policy statements, etc.) illustrating racial views and policies of all U.S. presidents. An individual chapter covers each man and closes with a bibliography and footnotes; sidebars highlight interesting historical incidents.
VERDICT This useful compilation draws together an eclectic range of materials that will save researchers an enormous amount of time. Highly recommended.
