When the wealthy Mr. Bingley docks his starcruiser on Elizabeth Bennet’s home moon of Heoros, she thinks he could be a perfect match for her unmarried sister Jane. Elizabeth is far less impressed by his companion, the aloof Mr. Darcy, but as she learns more about him, her opinion begins to change. Can the two of them overcome their bad first impressions? This remix of Jane Austen’s classic transfers much of the original novel’s text to an opulent spacefaring setting, a technique reminiscent of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith. Graphic designer Lampley adds lavish illustrations, handwritten notes, and lively chat logs between characters, highlighting perspectives unheard in the original. The visually pleasing result should appeal to Austen fans interested in collector’s editions. Staunch sci-fi fans will have to embrace a stardust-sprinkled Regency society rather than expecting complex worldbuilding. However, the remix provides a more modern and satisfying take on Lydia Bennet’s fate.
VERDICT Lampley’s (The Onyx Vial) adult debut is an eye-catching creation that will charm Austen lovers and fans of soft sci-fi romance.
