Grecian’s (
The Saint of Wolves and Butchers) latest is a brutal fantasy, redolent with wild West authenticity. There’s been a bounty put on the head of Sadie Grace, the witch of Burden County, KS. Her magic is formidable, but that’s not stopping an eclectic group of wanderers from tracking her down. Among this ragtag group are a schoolteacher turned farmer’s wife, two vagabond gunslingers, witch hunter Old Tom, and a mysterious unspeaking girl named Rabbit. Riding across the Kansas plains in a repainted stagecoach, this crew encounters a land filled with ghosts, devils, and the worst of humanity. Even if the bounty hunters survive that, there’s still Sadie Grace, and she’s not going down without a fight. Grecian’s world is one where witches and spells blend seamlessly with revolvers and stagecoaches. His dialogue and description faithfully pay homage to the style of Western writers like William Johnstone. The audiobook adds to the experience, thanks to narrator John Pirhalla’s gruff delivery and occasional guitar interludes that bring to mind campfire songs of old.
VERDICT This meandering, lushly described weird West tale will be a treat for fans of Alma Katsu, Rob DeBorde, and Rhett C. Bruno.
