Quilt pattern designer/educator Grogan (founder, Love Sew Modern; collaborator,
Small Blocks, Big Designs) gives quilters a wide variety of retro designs influenced by the aesthetics of the 1960s and 1970s. There are 15 patterns with intriguing names, such as “Rainbow Snails Quilt” and “Positively Pyrex Quilt.” The designs, mostly for quilts, but there are some pillows too, are eye-catching and bright. The clear illustrations will entice readers to try their hand at their own creations. The author provides advice on tools, materials, and three different methods for sewing curves. All the patterns in the book are machine-pieced. Each pattern is described in detail, with clear guidance about size, skill level, and fabrics, and there are thorough instructions on how to complete each project. All of the designs are aimed at readers with intermediate skills, so this would not be the book for someone trying to sew their first quilt.
VERDICT For serious quilters who are looking for detailed patterns and new and different designs to try.
