Interior designer Berk of
Queer Eye fame wants readers to move away from the concept of a design style or personal aesthetic and open themselves up to finding what makes them happy in their homes. The inclusion of worksheets to help people shift their perspective is a nice touch. The book mentions studies on color, clutter, and plants several times, but none are cited. It would have been nice to see information that was more inclusive of renters or people who live in spaces that are temporary for them. This book has a casual tone and rarely goes beyond the surface level. But Berk puts in the work to tie one’s sense of home to their mental and physical well-being, all without putting a lot of pressure on the idea that a home needs to be perfect to get there. Berk knows his fans well and addresses them directly in this text that helps people find their own style.
VERDICT Best for fans of Queer Eye, but this book may also appeal to readers who are looking for some design inspiration.
