This work is an adaptation of the mid-1980s
Robotech animated show. This second installment, adapted primarily by Baron (
Nexus) and drawn mainly by Vokes (
Eagle), is set in the future, after an initial alien contact that yielded the Robotech and subsequent alien invasions that wrecked Earth’s cities. The story focuses on recent military academy graduate Dana Sterling and her friends as they fight the alien invaders. Vokes and company often employ inventive layouts, and Baron’s scripts are refreshingly not self-important. Unfortunately, they are also heavily overwritten. So many plot points are conveyed in the dense dialogue that it slows down what should be a fast story.
VERDICT As Baron says in his introduction, the basic story is “a theme as old as fiction”--unfortunately, this means there’s a lot of competition. Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game and Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion tell the story better. Not recommended, except for serious Robotech fans.
