Avery Keene, the Black law clerk for a Supreme Court justice, returns in this follow-up to
While Justice Sleeps. This time Avery has acquired information that could lead to the impeachment of the president. Then a federal judge is blackmailed into releasing a prisoner, who goes on a killing rampage. The judge’s clerk appeals to Avery with cryptic information but is assassinated moments later. From there things get even more complicated. Avery and friends investigate with the help of a trusted FBI agent (all introduced in While Justice Sleeps) and discover a mastermind who’s plotting to disrupt the U.S. electrical grid and financial system in elaborate revenge for the justice system’s having failed her in a Navy rape case. With just weeks before the election and the president having survived impeachment, he and the rapist, now an admiral, are trying to suppress Avery’s evidence against them.
VERDICT Abrams’s experience as a Georgia legislator and big-time lawyer support insights into bureaucracy and security. The nonstop action and suspense mostly manage to overwhelm the reader’s sense of disbelief in a thriller that seems to burst out of today’s news.
