The concept of infinity has been contemplated for hundreds of years. And yet an overarching definition remains elusive. Nevertheless, several brilliant individuals have clarified certain aspects of infinity, and Lamúa has gathered together 150 examples of its interpretation arranged within sections for science, mathematics, technology, art, philosophy, and symbology. Each unsigned entry is two pages long (including images) consisting of a brief narrative of the history and importance of a specific aspect of the infinite, from the Ancient Greeks to Descartes to the HeLa cell line of Henrietta Lacks and beyond. Some entries may appear to have less to do with the concept than others. For example, wind energy is included as an unending source of energy. Likewise, the Large Hadron Collider is included because it has allowed the discovery of "infinitely small particles."
VERDICT Although the entries are too short to give detailed coverage of the ideas described, they introduce many topics with which lay readers may not be familiar. General readers may enjoy this work, but the lack of a bibliography or notes limits its research value.
