When Dartmouth University doctoral student Kate Moreton goes to Ireland on a scholarship, she plans to study life on the now-deserted Blasket Islands through an old Irish-language narrative of the place. On the way, however, Kate meets Gran, an ebullient woman whose grandson Ozzie becomes the love of Kate’s life. Kate and Ozzie’s sometimes tumultuous relationship and marriage paint a picture of deep affection but also the torture of loving a troubled man; their time together also allows Monninger (The Map That Leads to You) to offer vivid details of rural island life in Ireland’s past and present.
VERDICT Some of the language in the sex scenes is rather banal, but overall this is an enjoyable read for fans of Nicholas Sparks who want to experience another culture along with their romance. A worthy purchase for general fiction shelves.
