Debut novelist Larsen’s uneven suspense tale stretches credibility when its main character, Betty Roux, is cast in a famous director’s new film. This film is to be set on a remote island in Maine and is mostly unscripted. Stock characters and cliched situations (such as a storm that strands the film crew on the island just when things are at their most mysterious and perilous) weaken the story. Betty has just lost her father to suicide, and her unwillingness to deal with any emotions leaves her prey to the machinations of the film’s sinister director. Megan Tusing is an excellent narrator, which almost becomes a problem; she brings the whiny, critical, negative Betty to life so well that listeners will quickly grow to dislike the main character.
VERDICT Strictly an additional purchase.
