Thorpe (Just Like Us) is a fine reporter with an eye and ear for the details that bring her subjects to life. Here, she explores the lives of three women who signed up for the Indiana National Guard. The three varied in every way—one enlisted to pay for college, another to feel part of a bigger community, and the third in imitation of her father—but all were (and are) bound by the experience and hardships of serving in Afghanistan. Listeners are able to follow their narratives through the sometimes lively, sometimes sorrow-filled, and always appropriate reading by Donna Postel.
