The sixth installment in Grant's "Dark Kings" series finds the reader fully enmeshed in a complex plot featuring paranormal beings including dragon shifters, druids, and Dark and Light Fae. Darcy, a female druid from the Isle of Skye living in Edinburgh, is the focus of the action. She has done the unthinkable by helping Ulrik, a disgraced Dragon King bent on destroying all mortals, to regain his powers. Darcy is inexplicably attacked by Dark Fae, malevolent paranormal beings that feed on human souls, and the Dragon King Warrick, a dragon taking human form, is sent to protect her. Warrick is a loner, but he instantly feels drawn to Darcy, and she to him. Warrick repeatedly defends Darcy at the expense of his own safety. As the plot unfolds, we learn the true extent of Ulrik's plotting. Will Warrick be able to overcome his isolation and declare his love for Darcy? Will Darcy survive the mayhem?
VERDICT In this latest from Grant (Night's Blaze; Hot Blooded), sensational sex and authentic Scottish dialog make up for a labyrinthine plot, while the threat caused by the Dark Fae creates a nice backdrop to the desperate romance between Darcy and Warrick.
