Louis’s comedic space opera debut takes listeners to a future Earth owned by the Gainsbro Corporation. The Gainsbro Presents Gallant spaceship has been sent to explore Space Holes™ to discover new markets upon which to unload imperfect Gainsbro merchandise. Headlining the crew is a no-nonsense captain who enjoys lifting people by the face, an unassuming jazz saxophonist listed as ship’s cargo, a snarky spaceship AI, and a by-the-book corporate pencil pusher. Relatable working world occurrences, e.g., required self-guided webinars where the test takers skip to the end; passwords requiring an absurd number of characters; and a free two-week trial period that, if not canceled, defers to a nine-year contract, will have listeners nodding in familiarity. Surrounding the sardonic and surprisingly accurate commentary is plenty of action: crash landings, encounters with two-ton froglike aliens, ship explosions, arena battles, arm cannons, and shape-shifting planets. Narratorial virtuoso Scott Brick (“Dune” series; “Jack Reacher” series) magnificently captures the sarcastic tone and humor within this debut.
VERDICT This space romp will have listeners laughing at a robust cast and familiar workplace ridiculousness. Recommend not only for fans of “The Murderbot Diaries” series but for anyone who has dealt with inane corporate regulations.
