Suffering from Lyme disease and feeling so ill and fatigued that she considered assisted suicide, Slater, a former professor of French and comparative literature, decides as a last resort to fly to Siberia to undergo an intensive dry fasting regimen overseen by Dr. Sergey Ivanovich Filonov. When the fasting began, Slater was given no food, liquids, or water for the first 36 hours. Thereafter, each dry fast was steadily increased until she had dry fasted for nine consecutive days. Slater’s descriptions of Siberia and the people she meets are charming. She also provides detailed information about her post-fast experiences, noting that she continues this practice on her own. The author wrote this book to help others experiencing similar chronic illnesses, and that aim comes through sincerely; however, depriving the body of water for extended periods of time can have dangerous and serious health ramifications. No reader should try the described protocols without medical supervision.
VERDICT While the work is well written and well organized, it offers instructions for a dangerous practice that should not be done in a self-help/DIY fashion. Giving readers such information (even though similar instructions can be found on the internet and through social media influencers) seems irresponsible.
