In
All Seasons, writer Loeb (later a consulting producer on the TV show
Smallville) and artist Sale (with Loeb,
Batman: The Long Halloween) retell part of Superman's well-known origins. Over four seasons, through four narrators (Pa Kent, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and high school sweetheart Lana Lang), Seasons (originally published in 1998) covers the year Clark Kent decides to be Superman and how it affects him. An integral part of Superman has always been that although his powers are alien, his values stem from his human upbringing. Seasons addresses his human emotions, too, as his modest desires take second place to what his character demands. There's an sf subplot, but, like Clark, the heart of the tales remain in Smallville, portrayed enthusiastically by Loeb and Sale.
VERDICT Along with the main story, this rerelease contains three other pieces by Loeb and Sale, but all were published elsewhere and are basically filler. Regardless, the book earns its "deluxe" designation with high production values that gloriously showcase Sale's detailed but unobtrusive art and Hansen's beautiful coloring. Recommended.
