Retired police superintendent Lulu Lewis and her cat companion, Conrad, are on holiday near Manchester, England when a cold case from Lulu’s past resurfaces. Conrad is special: he can talk and read human auras and together he and Lulu solve crimes and make the world a little safer. When two new murders appear to be linked to cold cases from five years ago, Lulu gets involved. In order to find out if a serial killer is back on a killing spree, she uses her training, past police connections in London, and Conrad’s special abilities to investigate the new deaths and how they might be related to previous cases. The duo discover an elaborate plot for revenge that spans more than a decade. Readers should not let the fun title and talking cat fool them. The novel explores more explicit themes of torture and violent death of the victims as well as the physical and sexual abuse of adolescents.
VERDICT This third “Conrad the Cat Detective” title (after The Cat Who Solved Three Murders) will satisfy those looking for a book that blends cozy sensibilities and more gritty mystery-thriller elements and explores an unusual crime-fighting partnership.
