Stephenson-Meere (Baby's First 100 Days), a midwife and nurse, integrates Western knowledge with Eastern philosophy (especially Hinduism) in this survey of the transformation of children from birth to age eight. Taking a holistic approach and emphasizing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social growth while leading readers through the developmental stages of human behavior, she parallels those with the blossoming lotus flower and seven chakras, or energy centers. Stephenson-Meere includes appendixes on chakras, human language and its development, and an overview of meditation.
VERDICT Readers should be aware that Stephenson-Meere approaches spirituality from a pantheistic perspective; therefore, this will appeal most to followers of Eastern religions as well as readers open to a New Age worldview. Even those not sympathetic to the book's spiritual perspective can glean valuable and practical tips (e.g., feeding recommendations and sleeping schedules) and insight on raising healthy children.
