Geronimo has finally decided to undo the spell that prevents U.S. expansion across the Mississippi River. He chooses Doc Holliday as his go-between to enlist the services of a young and promising American named Theodore Roosevelt to act as negotiator for American interests. The other medicine men who helped maintain the spell, however, oppose Geronimo's action and create a supernatural monster called War Bonnet with a single purpose: to kill Geronimo and Roosevelt. Once more, Holliday must postpone his projected demise from consumption to exercise his talents as shootist extraordinaire against a man sent to remove him from the equation—the notorious John Wesley Hardin.
VERDICT The third novel in Resnick's Weird West series (The Buntline Special; The Doctor and the Kid) continues to rewrite the history of the Old West in magical style, reinventing famous characters while remaining true to the spirit of the individuals involved. Lovers of the Old West, alternate history, cowboy steampunk, and fantasy in general should flock to this title and to its series predecessors.
