The ninth “Paws and Claws” mystery (after
The Good Dog’s Guide to Murder) begins with Holly Miller waking up in the inn owned by her family with a strange dog smiling at her. Her dog and cat don’t seem bothered by him, but she wonders whose pet he might be; she doesn’t have time to investigate further, as her family is gathering for the birthday of her grandmother. She soon discovers that the dog belongs to her cousin Josh, who is on the lam and camping out. When Holly finds a body in his tent the next day, Josh becomes a murder suspect. New guests at the inn suddenly seem to be suspicious as well. It’s a family affair with Holly, her pets, and her relatives rushing to clear Josh’s name as the mystery deepens and the body count climbs.
VERDICT Fans of the series will enjoy this latest, as will those who enjoy pet-centered mysteries. Newcomers will find the family tree in the front of the book handy to keep the relationships among the two- and four-legged characters straight.
