In his fifth adventure, treasure hunter Ethan Gage departs Paris in search of Aztec riches lost centuries ago in the Caribbean. Napoleon, his sometimes patron, manages to complicate the agenda, and Ethan, who always finds something but rarely gets to keep it, embroils himself in the Haitian revolution. An off-season hurricane and conflicts between the French and the British insert additional action. Historian Dietrich provides a richly accurate background, placing Ethan in the sugar isles just as major powers are beginning to evaluate the evils of slavery. John Pruden, a welcome new narrator for this series, does a fine job of portraying the self-deprecating swashbuckler.
VERDICT Fast paced and well written, this Storm will be welcomed by those who love adventure fiction of any period or historicals set in the  Napoleonic era. [“Written with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Dietrich’s...novel of high adventure is meant to be enjoyed and not critiqued,” read the review of the HarperCollins hc, LJ 4/15/12.—Ed.]
