Survival instructor Stewart (
Survival Hacks) offers up a selection of creative activities and projects designed to motivate parents and caregivers of young children to spend less time on screens and more time outside. Thirty activities are divided among five categories: “Nature Art,” “Fun and Games,” “Foraging and Food,” “Gear and Tools,” and “Wilderness Shelters.” Projects—tie-dyeing with natural materials, outdoor cooking, making mud bricks and container gardens, and more—are designed to get both adults and children to interact with the outdoors and each other. Each project has a suggested age range, starting at age three, and some require access to forests or water sources to be successful. An introductory chapter gives helpful tips on making the outdoor experience a positive one for all. Stewart maintains that anyone is able to enjoy nature, and he includes tips for urban dwellers as well.
VERDICT Each of this book’s activities will likely entice readers to enjoy time in nature and in all sorts of weather. Perfect for parents and caregivers of preschoolers and children in elementary school.
