This second title in the series featuring military investigator Army Special Agent John Puller is a fast-moving thriller. The action starts immediately after the first installment,
Zero Day. Puller is on vacation and mentally recovering when a letter from his worried aunt leads him to visit her in Paradise, FL. He arrives to find the woman dead from what the local police rule was an accident. Simultaneously, a mysterious man is in town with murder on his mind. Do their paths cross? Is something rotten in Paradise? The majority of the narration is performed by Ron McLarty, with Orlagh Cassidy handling the female characters. This uneven distribution of the readers' voices is slightly disruptive at first, but overall both performers are strong and appropriate. There are many similarities here to Lee Child's Jack Reacher, e.g., the lead character's physicality and military background and the stranger in a new situation.
VERDICT Recommended for fans of Baldacci and of military thrillers. Reacher fans may also get hooked. [The Grand Central hc was a New York Times best seller.—Ed.]
