Hugh Knight (Rodger Corser) is now half-way through his one-year assignment as a rural GP in Whyhope, his Australian hometown. The talented but hedonistic Sydney heart surgeon is there as a kind of official "penance" because of inappropriate personal conduct. Hugh has changed and behaves (at least sometimes) with less of the arrogance he previously exhibited with both his family and his colleagues. A lot happens with these characters in series two. For starters, Hugh's teenage son Ajax (the result of a youthful fling) wants to get married. Then Hugh's father needs a new kidney, with Hugh the only suitable match. Meryl (Hugh's politically ambitious mother) may have fraudulently engineered her election as Whyhope's mayor, and as a possible romance develops between Hugh and Whyhope hospital administrator Penny (Hayley McElhinney), Hugh's wife shows up with divorce papers, but does he really want their relationship to end?
