The Hollywood Assistant

Cassidy Foster starts her Los Angeles life in the cushy position of personal assistant to screenwriter Nate Sterling and his starlet wife, Marisol Torres. Everything seems perfect.; the work is easy, the pay is good, and when Nate starts asking Cassidy to read scripts, it’s potentially her big break into Hollywood. But discontent stirs beneath the placid surface of Nate and Marisol’s relationship. Soon, Cassidy is spying for Nate, lying to Marisol, and finding herself falling in love—or into a trap, when one of her bosses is found dead and the clues point at her. Cobb gives subtle hints that Cassidy could be an unreliable narrator, while also fleshing out a tense mystery with a cast of duplicitous characters. Can the audience trust Cassidy? Can Cassidy trust anyone, or is she simply a pawn for Nate and Marisol? A surprising yet satisfying twist drives this point home, leaving listeners shocked but not totally caught unawares. Narrator Bethany Wilkerson shines in her performance of Cobb’s (A Likeable Woman) latest, deftly handling a variety of accents, often in the same conversation, without them bleeding into one another. Each character sounds distinct in tone and speaking style.
