Ashley Whitelam has always seen ghosts. When she was a child, they warned of a fire that would change her life. She tried to pass on the warning, but the adults in her life ignored her, with fatal results. Even though Ashley’s ghostly visions left her after the fire, her father capitalizes on rumors of her powers. He creates a family business in which Ashley holds bogus séances and reads palms while her brother feeds her information about clients. Then, a string of child killings in the area prompts Ashley to offer her services to the police. She is shocked when her ghosts reappear and lead her to a body, and horrified when the police suspect her involvement. Ashley teams up with an American podcaster, hoping to find the killer and clear her name. Williams (Games for Dead Girls) creates a supernatural thriller where ordinary people are forced to contend with horrors, both real and otherworldly. Emma Fenney offers a compelling narration, tapping into the book’s unsettling atmosphere and capturing Ashley’s struggle to become her own person.
VERDICT A recommended listen. With its mix of mystery, paranormal thriller, and family drama, Williams’s latest should have broad appeal.
