Peter Shaughnessy can talk to plants and see ghosts, but these powers are no gift. Cursed by what he calls “them folk” back in Ireland nearly two centuries ago, he must wander forever far from home. With no way to die, and having lost everyone he loves, Peter travels to cities and towns where angered spirits are ready to cause trouble. He sends them on their way and leaves before he is noticed. Peter expects the same in Harrington, OH, where he slips into the role of the cemetery groundskeeper. However, a grieving boss, a couple of precocious kids, and the local museum director have Peter questioning his century-long wandering. When the town begins to feel the effects of a vengeful spirit, Peter has to make some hard decisions about his new friends and the man he has feelings for, as his leaving will put them in danger.
VERDICT Anderson (The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher) writes a curmudgeonly immortal protagonist and a (literally) haunting story full of heart; a delightful novel for those who enjoyed Sarah Pinsker’s Haunt Sweet Home.
