Hap Murray, a news reporter at an Alabama TV station, is assigned to check out the weird weather phenomena in Preacher’s Cove. The greenflash—a severe kind of thunderstorm—has been happening more and more frequently at Preacher’s Cove, killing numerous people each time a storm occurs. Hap meets Libby Arbuckle, the owner of the local hotel and restaurant in town. Libby is also the twin sister of Lucy; Lucy was badly hurt in a fire many years ago, also losing two sons. Libby also has suffered. She lost two husbands over the years to the greenflash lightning. As Hap begins to research the origins of the greenflash storms, he makes contact with a local minister, who may be hiding something too. That “something” may be big enough to attempt to murder Hap with two separate snake attacks in his hotel room.
VERDICT As long as readers don’t expect any plausibility to the story line, this overwrought Southern gothic from Davis (Countenance) is actually an enjoyable read. The characters, particularly Hap and Lucy, are fun.
