Emily (Lydia Wilson) is a poor but refined girl employed as a companion to the snooty Lady Maria (Joanna Lumley). When Maria's widowed nephew, Lord James Walderhurst (Linus Roache), meets Emily, he decides (quite unromantically) that she would be a sensible wife who could produce an heir. James, a military man, returns to India during a time of government crisis, and his unscrupulous nephew Alec (James D'Arcy) and his wife, Hester (Hasina Haque), seize the opportunity to take advantage of Emily's vulnerability in the enormous but isolated estate that she now shares with just a few servants. Alec, a scoundrel, wants the estate, and a pregnant Emily stands in his way.
VERDICT Based on Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1901 novel The Making of a Marchioness, this program is dark, absorbing, and genuinely scary, even though you know deep down that all will end well. Viewers will want to watch it with the lights on. For most public library collections where British drama is popular.
