Charlton, editor of two previous editions of this title, plus The Executives Quotation Book and numerous other titles, has revised his work to include entries from the 21st century. The quotations cover various topics such as the causes of war, fear, mothers and sons, tactics, avoiding the fight, science, the hell that is war, politicians, and pacificism. Some of the material is profound, thoughtful, or prophetic, while other entries are humorous. A wide variety of authors are included, e.g., Mohandas Gandhi, Napoleon Bonaparte, Euripides, Mata Hari, Franz Joseph Strauss; in addition to early and current military leaders, statesmen, religious leaders, philosophers, actors, and common people are featured. However, the lack of a table of contents, an index, or appearance of the quotes in alphabetical order limits the use of the book for serious research.
VERDICT While it is mainly a browsing item, with its more than 1,100 entries, military enthusiasts and researchers may find this more interesting than books of general quotations.
