This graphic novel anthology offers readers easily digestible micro-servings of trans and nonbinary experiences alongside a vast array of artistic styles and aesthetics. Originally published as a Kickstarter campaign, this edition includes 29 creators, about a third of whom self-identify as people of color. Standout selections include Lucas—The Nifty Fox’s goofy, joyful and exuberant recollection of their top surgery in “Sweet Nips!”; Jam Aden’s dreamy pastel illustrations in “What’s the Point Then?” where they admit that the pressure of being “a good representation” of a trans person can interfere with their true potential; and Nasr Bin Safwan’s glorious, shattered self-portraits in “I’ve Been Sitting on this Porch for a Year.” The collection reminds readers that the rocky road to self-acceptance is long and arduous, and while the destination may never be fully reached, there are many worthwhile stops along the way.
VERDICT With the book’s sheer breadth of unflinching life experiences lovingly depicted within, appealing illustrations and candy-colored cover, and ample servings of humor, hope, and wit, it’s hard to imagine a public library collection that wouldn’t benefit from its inclusion.
